I was recently asked (with some amusement) why I continue to maintain a LiveJournal, given that it's "for 13-year-old girls", I've already got a Web site, and there are some Usenet groups where I'm certainly welcome.

On the first point, I don't see why it's relevant. LiveJournal is just a really cheap weblogging tool, and I can use it to post any kind of writing. That lots of young girls use it is of no import to me. If they have anything interesting to say, more power to them.

As for my static Web site, while it's not that difficult to put stuff there (I certainly know how to write HTML and use FTP), I'd long wished for a simple tool that I could use to add quick updates with a common template. The LiveJournal, from my perspective, is just an adjunct to the site that has one, and it frees me from maintaining anything on the host side. I may well tire of its many technical limitations eventually and defect to TypePad or something, but hacking my LiveJournal's styles to work a little better than the default has been an interesting challenge. The friends-list community aspect is kind of interesting too, but that was an unexpected side benefit, not the initial draw.

Finally, Usenet's a great thing, and is even thriving in spots. But there's a whole audience of people who don't care to read it, and some of them who knew me from elsewhere kept bugging me to get a weblog over the past year or two. Also, it's interesting (though perhaps not so pleasant for readers) for me to have a forum of my own where I'm under no particular pressure to perform to existing standards. I'm not about to give up Usenet any time soon; I post largely different things there.

The stigma was certainly one reason i simply refused to even consider getting an account here. But it helps me write more often, even if it's just a stupid little rant (OK, so it's usually either a stupid little rant or a link to some stupid little Web page). And the friends list is certainly a major feature for me, because it lets me keep up with people i wanted to keep up with.

If anything, i'm not happy with how a.r.k's turned into an LJ-like place... there's a lot less wacky fun and more "My mom crashed her car" personal baloney. The killfile works OK, but people i do read seem to feel a need to chime in with "aw poor you"-type comments. Bleh.

Yeah, and that's part of why I'd rather restrict my a.r.k postings to things that I at least think are amusing or creative. I've been making a lot of lame one-liner posts lately; I ought to write some longer pieces but haven't had the stamina.

I don't usually make the "aw poor you" posts except in really, really exceptional circumstances (I think my last one was when Dean's space shuttle crashed). I figure that most of the time, there will be plenty of other people willing to make them, and they ought to be in e-mail anyway.

There's certainly a lot more that I post to here than on ARK, because even though "You're Allowed" is the rule of the day, I try to hold myself up to a higher standard there. Usually. Maybe it's because it costs thousands upon thousands of dollars for each and every message to go through and the newsnet fund is dwindling fast. Or maybe it's because here, a) it's easier to skim articles on a friend's page, b)you have more of an idea who is reading what you post, and c) there's a higher prevelance of teenage whininess so blather is a bit more acceptable.

I believe I got my Livejournal because two separate unrelated people offered to give me codes to start one, and I figured I might as well go with the flow. That's right, peer pressure made me blog!!~

The ability to make private posts is sometimes useful, although I try not to be dumb enough to post anything TOO sensitive even so.

I haven't gotten much criticism, possibly because I haven't really publicised it too much. Kibo has made some '13 year old girl'-type comments, but such is the way of his people.
